The filmmakers also spent time trying to understand the character and personality that allows someone to become a submariner. They looked at training, family life, background, etc. The viewer visits a ” wet trainer” at Sub School to see what these submariners must endure before they ever climb inside one of these remarkable ships.
Who are these men, who live confined in a steel tube deep in the ocean for months at a time, surrounded by a hostile environment, in constant danger? What do they do and why do they do it?
Submarine Books – The War Below: The Story of Three Submarines That Battled Japan
From the thrill of a torpedo hit on a loaded freighter to the terror of depth charge attacks that shattered gauges and sprang leaks, The War Below vividly re-creates the camaraderie, exhilaration, and fear of the brave volunteers who took the fight to the enemy’s coastline. Scott recounts incredible feats of courage — from an emergency appendectomy performed with kitchen utensils to the desperate struggle of sailors to escape from a flooded submarine trapped on the bottom — as well as moments of unimaginable tragedy, including an attack on an unmarked enemy freighter carrying 1,800 American prisoners of war.
The casualty rate among submariners topped that of all other military branches. The war claimed almost one out of every five subs—and a submarine crewman was six times more likely to die than a sailor onboard a surface ship. But the submarine service accomplished its mission; Silversides, Drum, and Tang sank a combined sixty-two freighters, tankers, and transports. So ravaged from the loss of precious supplies due to the destruction of the nation’s merchant fleet were the Japanese that by the war’s end hungry civilians ate sawdust while warships lay at anchor due to lack of fuel and pilots resorted to suicidal kamikaze missions. In retaliation, the Japanese often beat, tortured, and starved captured submariners in the atrocious prisoner of war camps.

We received this very nice (and unsolicited) letter from a Submarine Veteran and his wife who served on the Diesel-Electric Submarine USS Tirante (a WWII fighting American Submarine that served in the fleet for many decades after the war it was built for) ~
“Dear Mr. Rollo,
Well, we saw the movies…here is our “verdict”: fantastic….it is a very well assembled story regarding the submarine service, and the tales by the individual submariners are priceless.
You get our vote for a job well done. We shall spread the word to our Redfish Base members to order the set as well. They won’t be disappointed.”

Meet the Submariners ~ Submarine Documentary Movie
Meet the Submariners – The Cast
A cross section of all Submariners …
Fifteen Submariners were interviewed for this feature across all types of Submarine Service.
This submarine feature movie documentary strives to bring an understanding of what it means to be a Submariner and the life on a submarine for the first time on screen. To be the definitive Submariner documentary movie.
From the Diesel Submariners, the Submariners who served on both Diesel Submarines and then the pioneering Nuclear Submarines as well as those who served on Nuclear Submarines during the Cold War.
Included are several Submariners who were part of the crew of the USS Nautilus SSN-571 on all three attempts to pass under the ice across the North Pole.
Many new details are revealed in this illustration of the achievements by the US Submarine Force for the benefit of not only the United States, but also mankind, science and in the hopes for world peace.
Discover the common thread that unites all Submarine Sailors. These Submarine Sailors represent the men who have served across time from the very early days of the US Submarine Force to the Submariners who serve today.
Bill Ford
Bill Ford served as a Diesel Submariner primarily on the USS Tirante SS-420 after it was converted to a GUPPY IIA and deployed to the North Atlantic and several Mediterranean missions. He was trained on board by and served along side with crew members who served on the Tirante during WWII. |
Shep Jenks
Shep Jenks was the navigator during the historic North Pole journey of the USS Nautilus SSN-571. See actual historic footage of Shep Jenks and his description of spending days in the nose of a bomber as he observed the polar ice flow before the third attempt to cross under the ice of the North Pole. |
Claud Little
First assigned to the USS Scorpion SSN-589 and then fate stepped in and he was transferred to the USS Nautilus just before the USS Scorpion made it’s final voyage and lost with all hands. |
David Long
One of the Diesel Submariners who was chosen to become one of the pioneering Nuclear Submariners. He made his first pacific deployment on the USS Menhaden SS-377. Upon returning to San Diego, he requested to go back into the Pacific on an extended WestPac deployment with the USS Sea Fox SS-402 which made it’s first stop at the island of Tahiti to his wild-eyed wonder experiencing natives in grass skirts. He moved to the USS Nautilus and was part of the crew on the historic journey across the North Pole. |
Jim Sandman
Serving exclusively on Fast Attack Submarines in Fire Control of weapon systems and targeting. A long career aboard many Nuclear Submarines during the Cold War and on to Desert Storm. |
Jon Jaques
A Nuclear Submariner who served on the USS Ohio SSGN-726 during the Cold War when the USS Ohio carried nuclear missiles as a fleet ballistic missile submarine, known as SSBN or “boomer” submarine. He is a submarine memorabilia collector and submarine historian who is actively involved with the USSVI (US Submarine Veterans). |
Frank Holland
A long career in the US Submarine Service beginning in the 1940s. After serving on many Diesel Submarines, he was then part of the crew of the USS Nautilus during all three attempts to pass under the ice of the North Pole. Hear and see his dramatic and gripping details of the first attempt to conquer the North Pole from the Atlantic side where the USS Nautilus became damaged and lost for three days. |
Jim Early
A Nuclear Submariner during the Cold War. He was the Sonar “ears” of SSBN “boomer” fleet ballistic missile submarines. His interest in the Navy and submarines started in his youth seeing movies and television shows such as “Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea” and was determined to join the US Submarine Force. |
Lynn Shearer
Radio Communications Provocative and humorous in his accounts, he led a very interesting life in the US Navy as he worked to become a Submariner. His journey through service culminated with service aboard the USS Nautilus. His priceless accounts of life on board the submarine, the humor, the food, the work and the practical jokes that make Submariners the unique people they are. |
Bobby Faircloth
This Georgia native farm raised Submariner first served on Diesel Submarines including the USS Amberjack SS-522 in the early 1950s. Because of his skill and experience, he was chosen for Nuclear School and then assignment on the USS Nautilus to be part of the historic North Pole journey. |
Bruce Aquizap
Starting out as a Diesel Submariner, he made the transition to Nuclear Submarines to join the crew of the USS Nautilus during its historic journey. It is his way of describing Diesel Submarine service that brings drama as well as great humor to this feature documentary. Growing up in a town that was all about building submarines, he fell in love with submarines at an early age. |
Karl Christopher
As the son of a 32 year Diesel Submariner, he achieved submarine school and served aboard Nuclear Submarines during the 1960s including the opportunity to be a member of the USS Nautilus crew. After service, he became an educator who encourages students with what it means to serve our great nation and to consider joining the US Submarine Service. |
Robert Childs
He was fascinated with technology growing up in the 1950s. As a young teenager, after reading a book about the USS Nautilus he was determined that he would become a Submariner and one day be a member of the Nautilus crew. His dream came true. His dramatic way of describing life and duty as a Submariner acts as the glue that holds the other accounts together. |
Fred Reker
A Diesel Submariner on the USS Razorback SS-394 during the early 1960s and the Cuban Missile Crisis. As a new Submariner, he discovered the rigors of making his qualifications during a WestPac deployment. With a deep knowledge of Diesel Submarines, he gives more than a mere glimpse into the heart and mind of the Submariner. |
Dennis Halstead
A Nuclear Submariner with tremendous insight into the honor of the Submariner. He was serving on the USS Nautilus and on duty when the collision with the USS Essex occurred. His insights to passing the escape tower tests brings the seriousness of the Submarine Service to light. |

As published in American Submariner Magazine:
“I give it five stars — must see!”
Every once in a while, we watch a film or movie and say, “wow!” This was my response to the new two hour submarine documentary called “Submariners: The Men of the Silent Service” by filmmaker Tony Rollo. This is an important film at a time where the need for future submarines is now being debated in the halls of Congress.
“This is not a rehash of any previously released material
– it is new, fresh and fun. I loved it!”
Based in Nashville, Tony started reaching out to submarine veterans in 2010 after learning a cousin had made the polar run on the Nautilus in 1958. Following a visit to a base meeting of the volunteer base in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Tony was hooked on the idea of sharing in submarine history and veteran’s stories to the viewing public — a movie made for both the public and those already enthused about submarines.
As a collector of submarine artifacts, photos, and films, I thought I had seen most of the available vintage submarine film footage. The new material found in this documentary is nothing short of unbelievable. Even the most seasoned submarine veteran will enjoy some of the previously unseen footage in this film.
The interviews and comments from shipmates who were there are both informative and humorous. There were several points where I laughed out loud and a couple of places where I said, “Bulls*#t!” This film has something for everybody, especially if you love good sea stories and a great cast of characters.
Tony does an awesome job telling the history of the submarine force from inception to today’s modern boats. When the film is done, you will smell the diesel fumes in your living room!
This is not a rehash of any previously released material — it is new, fresh and fun. I loved it!
I give it five stars — must see!
From American Submariner Magazine –
“Truly, a work of art.”
Gordon Palmer / National Editor
American Submariner Magazine / USSVI
After watching “Submariners: The Men of the Silent Service”, one would get a pretty good idea what part submarines and submariners played in our history.
Talking to Tony Rollo about the reason for producing the film, it was inspired by a childhood experience. He had a cousin who served on the USS Nautilus on its under the North Pole transit in 1958. From that time forward he was hooked on submarines. He produced the film in order to educate the general public. His film has made submariners reflect on their service and their experiences.
This is one of those must see to appreciate films that we hear about all the time from Hollywood. It brought back memories of being back on the boats.
Truly, a work of art.
